Importance of a validated decision within High Shear

September 30, 2020 2 min read

The High Shear mixer consists of a magnetically driven high-speed rotor in close proximity to a fixed stator. The created close-clearance gap between these two parts, in combination with high relative speed between them generates extremly high-shear forces as the material is processed though the High Shear Mixer.

The main characteristics of a rotor/stator mixer are high-speed, -shear and -power.

A High Shear mixer disperses or transports one phase of ingredient (liquid, solid or gas) into a main continuous phase (liquid) with which it would normally be non-soluble. It can be used in various industries for emulsification, homogenization, particle size reductions and dispersions.

Examples of final products are:

  • Emulsions – Fine dispersion of droplets of one liquid in another in which it is not soluble or miscible.
  • Suspensions - Mixture in which particles are dispersed throughout a fluid.
  • Lysols – Gas dispersed in liquid.

Metenova Application Lab for verifying your mixer selection

The High Shear mixer is a complex product that requires more investigation than with a general application mixer, prior to choosing the specifications. The solution is to perform tests and to see if the mixers performance is sufficient for the expected outcome. At Metenova we can aid the customer to perform these tests to ensure a correct chosen mixer.

If you are looking for emulsification, homogenization, particle size reduction or dispersion, this may be the mixer for you.  The next step is to verify by performing tests.

With a long experience in the engineering of magnetic mixers, and comprehensive knowledge of hands-on application – we keep challenging the limits of mixing technologies.
